Malkangiri Medical Mess: Junior MBBS Doctors Overburdened Amid Absence of Senior Specialists

Patients are not getting proper treatment at the District Head Hospital. As most departments do not have the required specialist doctors, MBBS doctors are providing patient care. Earlier, 33 MBBS doctors were providing treatment to patients at the District Head Hospital, but now their number has come down to 21. There are 36 working in the District Head Hospital instead of 86 doctors. Despite repeated demands to fulfill the posting of doctors, it is alleged that no result has been achieved. As a result, serious patients are not getting timely medical care.

The state government has approved posting of 38 specialists for the District Head Hospital. Out of 25 specialist posts, 36 doctors are working in the 86 posts, but 13 specialists are working in the cosmetic department (2), 3 in the gynaecology and obstetrics department (3), 2 in the surgery department (2), 3 in the eye department (3), 1 in the skin department (1), and 2 in the orthopedic department (2). In all other departments, 25 specialists have been posted. More than 300 patients come to the District Head Hospital for treatment every day. Patients from Malkangiri district and neighboring Chhattisgarh also rely on the main hospital. While MBBS doctors take care of the patients, the serious and critical patients are referred to outside districts or Koraput SLS Medical College for specialist advice. Due to which the patients and their relatives face immense hardship.
