Today, the Basunga Pat program was held to send the Administrator of Shri Jagannath Temple, Puri. Today, 380 kg of Basunga Pat was sent to the Administrator of Shri Jagannath Temple, Puri. The Minister of Cooperation, Handlooms, Textiles and Handicrafts Department, Shri Pradeep Bala Samanta, participated in the program as the chief guest. After the puja, the Basunga Pat program was started by hoisting the flag.
Addressing the media friends, the Minister Shri Pradeep Bala Samanta said in his response that Basunga Pat is a very sacred and special type of silk dori used in the important rituals of Shri Jagannath, Shri Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra in the Puri temple. Basunga Pat is a traditional silk fabric associated with the Shri Jagannath culture, which is a symbol of the silk and handloom history of Odisha. It represents a rare combination of spiritual discipline, traditional craftsmanship and indigenous technology.
The Basunga Pat is made from natural mulberry silk thread and dyed with the pulp of the kaitha fruit. Basunga is not only a religious item, but also a sacred symbol of devotion, craftsmanship and tradition. Its continued use in the rituals of Shri Jagannath reveals the invaluable heritage of Odisha’s temple culture and artistic skills. A process similar to Karuna Silk has been adopted for the production of this Basunga.
Karuna Silk is a non-violent and sustainable alternative to traditional silk, which is produced without harming the silkworms.
In this process, all the silkworms are allowed to live until they become full-fledged butterflies, completing their natural life cycle and emerging naturally from the silk cocoon.
The traditional method of killing the pupa and reeling the yarn through the old spinning process is completely avoided.
The Odisha Cooperative Silk Federation (SERIFED) in collaboration with the Handlooms, Weaving and Handicrafts Department, Government of Odisha has been supplying Basunga Pat to the Administrator of Shri Jagannath Temple, Puri since 1981.SERIFED has established ‘Karuna Silk’ as an affordable and sustainable alternative to traditional silk and as the premium ethical silk brand of Odisha.
Silk Odisha is a silk and handloom brand promoted and managed by Serifed, Silk Odisha stands for genuine silk, ethical production, handmade excellence, government assured qualities and cultural heritage.
Silk Odisha represents the rich tradition and heritage of silk cultivation and weaving sector of Odisha.
